Raising Awareness: Nourishment, Prevention, and Hope for Families Affected by Childhood Cancer

Hosted by: The Million Mom Movement Council
Featuring: Dominique Jeffries and Nayeva Florie

Honoring Families During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Each September, the Million Mom Movement gathers to honor families affected by childhood cancer — shining a light on prevention, nourishment, and community support.

During this heartfelt community action call, council members Dominique Jeffries and Nayeva Florie opened an important conversation about the toxins hidden in our modern food system, the rising rates of childhood illness, and how families can take back their power through awareness and organic nutrition.

“We never want to just talk about the problems,” shared Dominique. “We’re here to highlight solutions — practical ways families can feel supported physically, emotionally, and even financially.”

The Reality Families Face

Childhood cancer is a heartbreaking reality for too many families. The most common types include:

  • Leukemia – 28% of all childhood cases

  • Brain and central nervous system tumors – around 4,000 new diagnoses each year

  • Lymphomas (Hodgkin & Non-Hodgkin) – about 10–12% of childhood cancers

Beyond the physical challenges, families often face enormous financial and emotional strain.
Annual care can range from $40,000 to $120,000 per year, with some therapies exceeding $800,000. Add in lost income, travel costs, and the emotional toll of caregiving, and the burden can feel overwhelming.

The Hidden Links: Food, Toxins, and Inflammation

Council member Nayeva Florie reminded the community that our food supply has changed drastically — and not for the better. Many everyday ingredients are now linked to inflammation, immune dysfunction, and disease.

She highlighted several key culprits to avoid:

  • Artificial colors and dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1)

  • Artificial sweeteners (Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharin)

  • Processed meats (classified as Group 1 carcinogens)

  • Refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup

  • Hydrogenated oils and trans fats

  • Preservatives like BHA, BHT, and TBHQ

  • MSG and flavor enhancers hidden under many names

  • Glyphosate, the herbicide used on most conventional grains

“Glyphosate is found in over 75% of the food supply — and even in breast milk,” Dominique shared. “It disrupts the gut microbiome and robs the body of essential minerals needed to detoxify and heal.”

Why Gut Health Matters

The gut is the foundation of the immune system. When glyphosate and other chemicals destroy healthy gut bacteria, the body struggles to absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and eliminate toxins.

That’s why nourishing and cleansing the gut is central to the Million Mom Movement mission. Through education, community support, and organic superfoods, families are learning how to rebuild from within.

One key resource is Purium’s Biome Medic, a pre- and probiotic blend clinically shown to help remove 74% of glyphosate from the body within 6 weeks while lowering inflammation markers by 75%.

From Awareness to Action: Foods That Heal

To balance the conversation, Nayeva and Dominique focused on solutions — what we can eat and do to support the body’s natural healing systems.

Whole, organic foods:
Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, choose minimally processed items, and fill your plate with colorful produce.

Focus on:

  • Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts (detox support)

  • Organic fruits and berries for antioxidants and vitamin C

  • Whole grains and seeds like oats, quinoa, flax, and chia for fiber and omega-3s

  • Plant-based proteins from legumes, peas, and Purium’s Super Meal L.O.V.

  • Healthy fats from avocados, olives, hemp, and walnuts

  • Healing herbs and spices such as turmeric, matcha, ginger, chlorella, and spirulina

  • Clean hydration with purified water and mineral-rich electrolytes (like Aqua Vibrance)

Nourishing Solutions for the Whole Family

The Council shared how Purium’s organic superfoods make whole-body nourishment simple and accessible, especially during challenging times.

“This isn’t about restriction — it’s about regeneration,” said Dominique. “When we feed the body what it truly needs, everything begins to shift: energy, mood, focus, and peace of mind.”

The Power of Prevention

While medical care costs continue to rise, prevention through nutrition remains one of the most affordable, empowering, and impactful choices we can make.

“Investing in prevention today is far less costly than treatment tomorrow,” said Nayeva. “Our bodies are designed to heal if we give them the right tools — nourishment, movement, rest, sunlight, and connection.”

The Council also emphasized emotional healing as part of prevention. Stress, fear, and resentment can weigh on the body as heavily as physical toxins. Practicing forgiveness, gratitude, and joy creates space for vitality to flow again.

A Call to Community

As always, the Million Mom Movement ended the call with gratitude — for every caregiver, parent, and advocate showing up to make change.

“Whether you’re a mother, father, aunt, uncle, or friend — you’re welcome here,” shared Dominique. “This movement is for everyone who wants to make a difference in health, hope, and humanity.”
